Take a break

So, I took a break from social media - which in the grand scheme of things doesn’t seem like a big deal. But I promise you, it’s a game changer - and you don’t realise that until you actually do it. With my line of work, it’s hard to not look at screens which kinda sucks because I’m a huge lover of nature. But the positives of looking at screens for a large portion of my day means I get to be creative, expressive, make an impact, make our voices heard, join activism and much more.
I find that with everything going on right now, it is important to educate ourselves correctly with reliable sources and do what we can as a community and as a generation to make a real change. And sometimes we feel social media is the key to doing that, but that’s not always the case. We can reach out face to face to activist groups, social circles, pick up the phone to talk to a life long friend you haven’t spoken to in so long, and actually getting more in touch with reality rather than connecting through our apps. My break didn’t just effect the way I connected socially and professionally, but it made me realise that the pace in which we spend our lives really only matters when you’re not posting it or sharing it. The silent wins. The cherished moments you have with yourself on your own and loved ones that you haven’t posted because it matters more to keep it to yourself. It’s been Incredible not knowing what everyone is up to and exhausting myself comparing thinking ‘should I be doing more’ on so many levels. Not being consumed by pointless gossip and negative material. It’s been life changing and quite honestly, I think I will go back to doing it on a personal level separate to my work.
I found my motivation and energy levels improved, however I’m not going to lie, I still suffer from anxiety and depression which often leads to the feelings of being in a rut which ruin my productivity. BUT! Coming off socials definitely had a positive impact on this, and I found I was able to focus a lot more than I did before and get out of those ‘ruts’ a lot easier. If anything, it’s just hi lighted areas I STILL need to work on - it’s all a journey!
